Hague: UK to pull out of G8 preparatory talks

British Foreign Secretary William Hague says Britain will suspend its participation in preparatory talks for a G8 meeting in the Russian city of Sochi.

Hague spoke to reporters on Sunday before leaving for Ukraine's capital Kiev to meet with the interim government.

Hague said the British government has to recognize that Ukraine's sovereignty and the territorial integrity has been violated.

He agreed with an announcement by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius that preparations for the G8 meeting should be suspended.

He also said Britain will join other G8 countries this week in suspending its cooperation under the G8.

The British foreign secretary said that he is going to Kiev to meet the new Ukrainian leaders, including the acting president.

He added that it's very important to do everything the British government can to calm tensions.

Hague also said that he will continue to urge Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to speak directly to Ukrainians.
