UN, US condemn N.Korea's human rights abuses

The chairperson of the UN commission investigating human rights abuse by North Korea says he hopes the final report will galvanize the international community.

Former Australian judge Michael Kirby was speaking to reporters in Geneva after releasing the report on Monday.

He said ignorance will no longer be a valid excuse for failing to act.

In Washington, spokesperson for the US State Department Marie Harf said the report reflects a consensus in the international community that the human rights situation in North Korea is among the world's worst.

She issued a statement saying the US government urges North Korea to follow the UN commission's recommendations to improve the human rights situation for its people.
