UN urges China to stop N. Korean deportation

A United Nations commission studying human rights in North Korea has issued a report that urges China to stop sending North Korean defectors back.

The commission criticizes China for taking the position that the defectors are illegally entering the country for economic reasons. The report argues that they are entitled to international protection.

It says North Koreans deported by China face persecution and torture when they return home.

The report says forcibly returning North Koreans is a violation of human rights laws.

The report also says Chinese authorities denied the commission members access to areas where they hoped to conduct interviews with North Koreans.
