Russia stepping up pressure on Ukraine opposition

Moscow is stepping up pressure on Ukraine in response to moves to curb Russian influence in the country.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday condemned the rise of what he called nationalist sentiment in Ukraine.

Ukraine's interim leaders recently banned the use of Russian as an official language.

Lavrov said the measure is intended to turn the Russian-speaking population into "non-citizens."

Lawmakers have begun discussing measures to make it easier for ethnic Russians from Ukraine to get Russian nationality.
