North Korea's state-run television has aired celebrations of the late leader's birthday, which falls on Sunday. The festivities include concerts, ice and snow festivals, and figure-skating events.
A commemorative rally took place on Saturday in Pyongyang. Kim and other senior officials attended.
The president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, Kim Yong Nam, addressed the rally. He said Kim Jong Un has inherited his late father's thoughts and achievements.
Kim Yong Nam indicated his country will work to improve ties with South Korea. He said the North will open a new phase for peace and prosperity as well as the reunification of the Korean Peninsula.
