Kerry visits UAE to discuss Syria

US Secretary of State John Kerry has visited the United Arab Emirates and discussed Syria's civil war with Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The UAE's state-run news agency said that on Monday the 2 discussed Geneva peace talks on Syria that were suspended last weekend and relations between their countries.

Kerry has blamed the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for stalling progress in the talks.

The UAE and other Gulf Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, support Syria's opposition forces and have demanded that Assad step down.

An NHK reporter says Kerry and the UAE leader are believed to have discussed strengthening assistance to the anti-government forces.

US President Barack Obama plans to visit Saudi Arabia in late March. The US government is trying to work closely with Arab nations to respond to the Syrian crisis.
