Malaysia starts detaining migrants

The authorities in Malaysia say they have detained some 2,500 migrants at the beginning of an enforcement campaign aimed at deporting 500,000 illegal immigrants.
Tens of thousands of police, soldiers, immigration officials and local enforcement personnel are taking part in the country's largest round up of foreign workers -- many from Indonesia, Bangladesh and Burma.

Officials said they were focusing on migrants who registered under an amnesty programme but failed to turn up for processing.
