An American soldier who admitted killing 16 Afghan civilians in Kandahar province in 2012 has apologised, calling the killings "an act of cowardice". Sergeant Robert Bales said he was operating behind a mask of fear and bravado.
"I'm truly, truly sorry to those people whose families got taken away" he said at his hearing at a Washington state military base.
The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty.
